Why: Baby boomers are getting their need for a soft adventure fix satisfied with outdoor thrills in the Hocking Hills region, about 40 miles southeast of Columbus, Ohio, at the edge of the Appalachians. The 2,000-acre Hocking Hills State Park is filled with caves, falls and challenging trails through massive beech trees, towering hemlocks and other hardwoods.
The region's newest attraction is the bike and ATV training, rental and guide service offered by Hocking Hills Nature Trails. Bicycle rentals are also available at each end of the Hock-Hocking Adena Bikeway, a scenic 19-mile stretch of Rails to Trails bikeway that runs between Nelsonville and Athens. Hocking Hills Canopy Tours this summer added recreational tree-climbing adventures to its already successful zip-line journeys. During the zip-line adventure, guests soar 70 feet above the ground at speeds up to 60 mph on 10 zip lines.
